Open Office 4 Kids

openofficeforkids2

Yes, Open Office 4 Kids is available now, based on OpenOffice.org’s OpenOffice suite. Sure, it’s a watered down verision for the target ages of 7 to 12 years old- but it’ll be a welcome tool for students and teachers (and parents) in search of some basic word processing and related tools. So far it looks pretty cool. I’ve got to play around with it some more, but for home and for a classroom I think it’s a great tool! Click on the  image above to be taken to the download site- thanks OpenOffice.org! (Happy 9th Birthday OpenOffice.org)

Bar Coded Educator!

edtech2barcoded

Just got a great lesson in history via Google’s web page…for those of you who didn’t see it- they have a big bard code replacing the word Google to celebrate the first barcode patent some 57 years ago! Happy Birthday Barcode! It’s another one of those ubiquitous aspects of modern times! I also ran across a great site to share in the classroom allowing for the creation of your very own bar codes (wow, that may a bit dangerous). I created our EdTechteachers site as a bar code…really nerdy hunh? Click on the bar code below to get to Barcodes, Inc. (thanks guys and gals)!

BitStrips for Schools! Yep…

bitstripsclassroom

Just from looking at my blog site’s side bar, you can tell I’m a big fan of BitStrips! I’ve taught it, bragged about it and played with it and when I’m with teachers I always throw out the caution to look before you click since BitStrips has been open to the public and usually unfiltered- until now! The company has been working on and is now ready to release a version for schools to use that creates a virtual classroom for teachers and students! Enough talk, check out the price listing and video tour by clicking on the graphic above and/or watch the tour below! Big Gold Star to BitStrips!

StoryBird a Very Cool Collaborative Storytelling tool (web based of course)

storybird1

I played around this evening with StoryBird and this weekend I’ll give it to my tester (daughter) to give me her opinion! I’m sure if I like it, being a former 3rd grade teacher (and big kid myself) she’ll love it. Most of what she does is web based compared to what I and my students worked with! Of course, StoryBird is in Beta, and they do hint at being able to publish/print the web based creations! Run on over and check it out by clicking on the image above.

Houston we have lift off via Web 2.0!

wechoosethemoon1.jpg

Now this is just too cool! I ran across this web site/historic event by WeChooseTheMoon.org today and had to share it. I’m a huge fan of the Space Program/NASA having lived and breathed it for 10 years working at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama – you had too! Here’s the excerpt by Engadget blogger Darren Murph (thanks Darren):

“WeChooseTheMoon.org is being launched to recreate the whole spectacle. Starting a full 90 minutes prior to the 40th anniversary (that’s 8:02AM on July 16th), the site will be fully operational, tracking the capsule’s route from Earth to the moon. Reportedly, visitors will be able to peek “animated recreations of key events from the four-day mission, including when Apollo 11 first orbits the moon and when the lunar module separates from the command module.” If you’re one of those who remembers “exactly where you were on that fateful day,” you should probably queue up a Google alert and bookmark your browser to relive the whole experience again.”

Make certain you click the graphic links above and below to get your front row seat to this historic re-event! Again, thanks Darren and thanks WeChooseTheMoon.org!

T-Minus 66 hours and counting!!!! :)

Google Wave…Oh, I can’t wait for this!

googlewave.jpg

This is just too cool! The folks at Google are always impressing me with the technology they come up with, and with this announcement they certainly aren’t letting me down! I’m a big fan and promoter of Google Docs, we use it in our group to do just about everything in terms of documents, spread sheets, etc.(Sorry Microsoft…we do still use your Office suite from time to time) but the biggest reason we went to Google Docs outside of being free was the Collaboration aspect! It Rocks! We chat from time to time in Google chat whilst checking our GMail…but this new evolution called “Google Wave…” I’m just going to post what’s on Google’s page instead of retyping! Of course, it’s still in the works- but you can sign up to be one of the lucky few to get a ride on the “Wave!”- sorry, couldn’t help myself! Click the image to be taken directly to the site…did I mention it’ll do real time translation! yep…
